What is a Breast Lift?

Breast lift surgery – also known as mastopexy – is utilized to raise and firm the breasts. While this procedure will not increase the size of your breasts, it is an effective way to improve the shape and contour of your breasts, enhance your figure and provide a more youthful appearance.

There are many factors that can cause a woman’s breasts to change over time, including loss of skin elasticity, weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding or even the long-term effects of gravity. A breast lift can counteract these effects and give your breasts a more youthful shape and firmness.

About the Procedure:

Breast lift surgery involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the newly-enhanced contour of your breasts. In some cases, a breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola if it has been become enlarged over time. The incisions made for breast lifts vary case by case and may be made around the areola, vertically down from the breast crease or horizontally along the breast crease. The plastic surgeons at LSU will consult with you, explain each procedure and help you determine the right method for your body.

An elastic bandage or support bra will also be used to support the breasts as they heal. As with most surgical procedures, recovery time will vary from patient to patient and should be discussed with the physician. In addition, you will be given instructions pertaining to caring for your breasts, any medications that may be needed and when a follow-up visit to the surgeon may be needed.
