What is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that can be considered if the underside of your upper arm sags or appears loose and full, due to excess fat and skin. Through an arm lift procedure, excess sagging and drooping skin can be reduced, the tissue defining the shape of the upper arm can be tightened and smoothed, and localized pockets of fat can be reduced in the upper arm.Several factors can result in sagging and drooping of the upper arm, such as age, heredity, and fluctuations in weight. This unwanted appearance cannot be corrected with exercise.

About the Procedure

During an arm lift procedure, a cut is made under your inner arm, and the scar will be less likely to be noticeable once healed. Excess skin and fat is surgically removed. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis, and can last two to four hours. There will be swelling in your arms during the first two weeks after surgery. You will wear supportive wraps for up to six weeks, during which time, swelling will improve. Temporary bruising and numbness can occur, and will disappear in time. As with any surgical procedure, recovery time will vary from patient to patient. Your LSU Plastic Surgeon can answer any specific questions you have about surgical options, the procedure and your recovery time.
